Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial
To the day the vast amounts of documents of the former East German Ministry for State Security, commonly known as the Stasi, are not yet conclusively evaluated. Being directly involved via its own research projects the Berlin-Hohenschoenhausen Memorial structured some thousand Berlin locations topographically and came up with the idea to create a huge walkable exhibit out of this.
The need to connect a 70 m² aerial photograph with an information layer makes AR on ipads a perfect solution – not least as the explorative process of uncovering invisible structures suits the topic so well. The concept envisaged markers for different categories that could be activated on two levels, with the second one resultin in an fullscreen overlay. Special areas would make a 3D model pop up for a more detailed examination. In a different mode historic cases would offer a timeline that could be retraced place by place. A final option was the use of adhesive retroreflective dots: in temporarily dimmed light and with simple headlights as second gadget visitors would be able to grasp the amount of locations outside of the tablet’s narrow frame – with the naked eye.
